    Control of power converter in modern power systems

As the renewable-based generations and battery storage systems are increasingly displacing conventional generations, it becomes more and. more difficult to maintain the stability and reliability of the grid by using only conventional generations. The main reason for the degradation of grid stability is the rapid penetration of nonconventional sources. These new generations interface with the grids through power electronics converters which are conventionally designed to maximize conversion efficiency and resource utilization. Indeed, these power converters only focus on their internal operation despite the grid conditions, which often worsens the grid operation. To overcome such a drawback, the grid-forming concept has been proposed for power converters, aiming to redesign the control of the power converters to enforce more grid-friendly behaviours such as inertia response and power oscillation damping to name a few. Despite the rich literature, actual adaptation of grid-forming controller in real-world applications is still rare because incentives for renewable power plants to provide services based on such advanced grid-forming functions were at best scarce. In the last years, however, several system operators have imposed new requirements and markets for grid-supporting services. In addition, the existing grid-forming controllers require modification to low-level control firmware of a power converter, which is often unrealistic due to the control hardware limitations as well as necessary testing and certifications. To ensure a stable operation of a grid-forming converter under adverse operating conditions, a robust voltage sensorless current controller is developed in this PhD thesis. The proposed controller is able to handle most of the possible abnormal conditions of the grid such as impedance variations, unbalanced voltage; harmonics distortion. These abnormalities of the grid are mathematically represented using equivalent linear models such that they can be used for calculating the controller gains. Linear matrix inequality techniques are also used to facilitate parameter tuning. In fact, the performance and stability of the current control loop can be determined through only two tuning parameters instead of eight parameters for a controller of a similar structure. The existing grid-forming implementations are designed considering that the control firmware of the power converter can be upgraded at will. However, modifications of the control firmware are not straightforward and cost-effective at mass scale. To overcome such a limitation, an external synchronous controller is presented in this PhD thesis. The external synchronous controller uses measurements, which are either provided by the power converter or a dedicated measurement unit, to calculate the actual active and reactive power that should be injected by the power converters in a way that the power plant acts as an aggregated grid­forming converter. As a result, any conventional power converters can be utilized for providing grid-supporting services with minimal modification to the existing infrastructure. Power converters can provide even better performance than a synchronous generator if a proper control scheme is used. In this regard, the final chapter of this PhD thesis presents the multi-rotor virtual machine implementation for grid-forming converter to boost their damping performance to power oscillations. The multi-rotor virtual machine-controller implements several virtual rotors instead of only one rotor as in typical grid-forming strategies. Since each of the virtual rotors is tuned to target a specific critical mode, the damping participation to such a mode can be increased and adjusted individually. The controllers presented in this PhD thesis are validated through simulators and experiments in the framework of the H2020 FlexiTranstore project. The results are throughout analysed to assess the control performance as well as to highlight possible implications.A medida que las generaciones basadas en energías renovables y los sistemas de almacenamiento de baterías desplazan la generación convencional, se vuelve cada vez más difícil mantener la estabilidad y confiabilidad de la red. Estas nuevas generaciones interactúan con las redes a través de convertidores de electrónica de potencia que están diseñados tradicionalmente para maximizar la eficiencia de conversión y la utilización de recursos. Estos convertidores centran su funcionamiento interno independientemente de las condiciones de la red, lo que a menudo empeora el funcionamiento de la red. Para esto, se ha propuesto el concepto de convertidores de potencia formadores de red (grid-forming), con el objetivo de rediseñar el control de los convertidores de potencia para imponer comportamientos más favorables a la red, por ejemplo, la respuesta inercial y la amortiguación de oscilaciones de potencia. No en tanto, la adaptación real del controlador grid-forming en aplicaciones del mundo real todavía es escasa debido a los pocos incentivos para que las plantas de energía renovable proporcionen servicios basados en funciones de formación de red tan avanzadas. Aunque en los últimos años, operadores de sistemas han impuesto nuevos requisitos y mercados para servicios auxiliares, los controladores grid-forming existentes requieren cambios en el firmware de control de bajo nivel de un convertidor de potencia, algo poco realista debido a las limitaciones del hardware de control, así como a las pruebas y certificaciones necesarias. En esta tesis se desarrolla un controlador de corriente robusto, sin sensor de tensión, para garantizar el funcionamiento estable de un convertidor grid-forming en condiciones de operación adversas. Este controlador es capaz de manejar la mayoría de las condiciones anormales de red, como variaciones de impedancia, tensión desequilibrada y distorsión de armónicos. Estas anomalías de la red se representan matemáticamente mediante modelos lineales equivalentes, utilizados para calcular las ganancias del controlador. También, usando técnicas de desigualdad matricial lineal para facilitar el ajuste de parámetros. De hecho, el rendimiento y la estabilidad del bucle de control de la corriente pueden determinarse mediante sólo dos parámetros de sintonización. Las implementaciones de formación de red existentes están diseñadas considerando que el firmware de control del convertidor de potencia puede actualizarse a voluntad. Sin embargo, las modificaciones del firmware de control no son sencillas ni rentables a gran escala. Por tanto, esta tesis presenta un controlador síncrono externo que utiliza las mediciones proporcionadas por el convertidor de potencia o por una unidad de medición dedicada para calcular la potencia activa y reactiva real que deben inyectar los convertidores de potencia, de forma que la central eléctrica actúe como un convertidor grid-forming agregado. Como resultado, cualquier convertidor de potencia convencional puede utilizarse para proporcionar servicios de apoyo a la red con una modificación mínima de la infraestructura existente. Los convertidores de potencia pueden ofrecer mejor rendimiento que un generador síncrono utilizando un esquema de control adecuado. El último capítulo de esta tesis presenta la implementación de una máquina virtual multirrotor para que los convertidores de red aumenten su rendimiento de amortiguación de las oscilaciones de potencia. El controlador de la máquina virtual multirrotor implementa varios rotores virtuales en lugar de un solo rotor como en las estrategias típicas de grid-forming. Dado que cada uno de los rotores virtuales está sintonizado para dirigirse a un modo crítico específico, la participación de la amortiguación a dicho modo puede aumentarse y ajustarse individualmente.     LMI-based control design to enhance robustness of synchronous power controller

Although the feasibility of the SPC has been experimentally verified under various operating conditions, parameter tuning for the SPC to ensure a stable inverter system has not been adequately addressed in the literature. To fill this gap, this paper presents a robust control design for the SPC to ensure its stable operation under the grid impedance variation. The proposed design procedure consists of system modelling and robust optimal parameter selection by using linear matrix inequality approach.     Multi-rotor virtual machine for grid-forming converter to damp sub-synchronous resonances

    Grid-forming power converters (GFMC) have been widely adopted in power systems as an attractive solution against the challenges imposed by the ever-increasing penetration of renewables. Despite its versatility, GFMC is employed only to provide islanded operation, grid regulations, and synthetic inertia. To further extend the use of GFMC in enhancing power system stability, this paper proposes a multi-rotor virtual machine (MRVM) controller to attenuate sub-synchronous oscillations. Driven by the formulation of a virtual synchronous machine (VSM), the proposed MRVM implements a VSM-based GFMC with several virtual rotors whose electromechanical characteristics can be individually adjusted to target specific oscillatory modes in the system. In this work, the MRVM’s working principle is described in detail and tuning guidelines are proposed to simplify the selection of control parameters by using frequency-domain techniques and the eigenvalue locus analyses. To validate the performance of the MRVM, an IEEE benchmark grid model is adopted namely, the three-machine-infinite-bus system.     Power quality services provided by virtually synchronous FACTS

    The variable and unpredictable behavior of renewable energies impacts the performance of power systems negatively, threatening their stability and hindering their efficient operation. Flexible ac transmission systems (FACTS) devices are able to emulate the connection of parallel and series impedances in the transmission system, which improves the regulation of power systems with a high share of renewables, avoiding congestions, enhancing their response in front of contingencies and, in summary, increasing their utilization and reliability. Proper control of voltage and current under distorted and unbalanced transient grid conditions is one of the most critical issues in the control of FACTS devices to emulate such apparent impedances. This paper describes how the synchronous power controller (SPC) can be used to implement virtually synchronous FACTS. It presents the SPC functionalities, emphasizing in particular the importance of virtual admittance emulation by FACTS devices in order to control transient unbalanced currents during faults and attenuate harmonics. Finally, the results demonstrate the effectiveness of SPC-based FACTS devices in improving power quality of electrical networks. This is a result of their contribution to voltage balancing at point of connection during asymmetrical faults and the improvement of grid voltage quality by controlling harmonics flow.Postprint (published version

    Grid-forming power converters tuned through artificial intelligence to damp subsynchronous interactions in electrical grids

    The integration of non-synchronous generation units and energy storage through power electronics is introducing new challenges in power system dynamics. Specifically, the rotor angle stability has been identified as one of the major obstacle with regards to power electronics dominated power systems. To date, conventional power system stabilizer (PSS) devices are used for damping electromechanical oscillations, which are only tuned sporadically leading to significant deterioration in performance against the ever-changing operating conditions. In this paper, an intelligent power oscillation damper (iPOD) is proposed for grid-forming converters to attenuate electromechanical inter-area power oscillation. In particular, the iPOD is applied to a synchronous power controller (SPC) based grid-forming power converter to increases gain of the active power control loop at the oscillatory frequency. Predictions regarding the mode frequency, corresponding to the current operating points, are given by an artificial intelligence ensemble model called Random Forests. The performance of the proposed controller is verified using the two area system considering symmetrical fault for random operating points.     External inertia emulation controller for grid-following power converter

    The advent of renewable energy has posed difficulties in the operation of power systems whose net inertia is becoming critically low. To face such challenges, grid-forming power has been one of the potential solutions pursued by the industry and research community. Although promising, grid-forming power converters are still immature for mass deployment in power systems. In the meanwhile, an enormous amount of grid-following power converters has been underexploited when it comes to grid-supporting functionalities. Therefore, this article proposes an external inertia emulation controller (eIEC) for grid-following power converter to provide frequency support to the grid. For the purpose of minimizing installation efforts and resources, the controller is designed in such a way that it can be implemented in an external controller communicating with the grid-following power converter via an industrial communication link. This article also investigates the effect of communication delay on the stability performance of the proposed controller.     Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome

    The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead

    Safety and efficacy of fluoxetine on functional outcome after acute stroke (AFFINITY): a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial

    Background Trials of fluoxetine for recovery after stroke report conflicting results. The Assessment oF FluoxetINe In sTroke recoverY (AFFINITY) trial aimed to show if daily oral fluoxetine for 6 months after stroke improves functional outcome in an ethnically diverse population. Methods AFFINITY was a randomised, parallel-group, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial done in 43 hospital stroke units in Australia (n=29), New Zealand (four), and Vietnam (ten). Eligible patients were adults (aged ≥18 years) with a clinical diagnosis of acute stroke in the previous 2–15 days, brain imaging consistent with ischaemic or haemorrhagic stroke, and a persisting neurological deficit that produced a modified Rankin Scale (mRS) score of 1 or more. Patients were randomly assigned 1:1 via a web-based system using a minimisation algorithm to once daily, oral fluoxetine 20 mg capsules or matching placebo for 6 months. Patients, carers, investigators, and outcome assessors were masked to the treatment allocation. The primary outcome was functional status, measured by the mRS, at 6 months. The primary analysis was an ordinal logistic regression of the mRS at 6 months, adjusted for minimisation variables. Primary and safety analyses were done according to the patient's treatment allocation. The trial is registered with the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry, ACTRN12611000774921. Findings Between Jan 11, 2013, and June 30, 2019, 1280 patients were recruited in Australia (n=532), New Zealand (n=42), and Vietnam (n=706), of whom 642 were randomly assigned to fluoxetine and 638 were randomly assigned to placebo. Mean duration of trial treatment was 167 days (SD 48·1). At 6 months, mRS data were available in 624 (97%) patients in the fluoxetine group and 632 (99%) in the placebo group. The distribution of mRS categories was similar in the fluoxetine and placebo groups (adjusted common odds ratio 0·94, 95% CI 0·76–1·15; p=0·53). Compared with patients in the placebo group, patients in the fluoxetine group had more falls (20 [3%] vs seven [1%]; p=0·018), bone fractures (19 [3%] vs six [1%]; p=0·014), and epileptic seizures (ten [2%] vs two [<1%]; p=0·038) at 6 months. Interpretation Oral fluoxetine 20 mg daily for 6 months after acute stroke did not improve functional outcome and increased the risk of falls, bone fractures, and epileptic seizures. These results do not support the use of fluoxetine to improve functional outcome after stroke

    Grid-following and grid-forming PV and wind turbines

    As penetration of photovoltaic (PV) and wind generation systems driven by grid-connected power converters monotonously increases, unusual interactions between innovative and legacy generation systems become more concerning, since they threaten the system stability and reliability. These undesirable interactions are mainly due to the fact that power converters and conventional electromechanical generators currently work under different physical and control principles and rules. This gives rise to some incompatibilities in terms of dynamic response and physical limits, which has become evident once the share of power converters connected to the grid has become relevant enough. In order to address this issue, this chapter presents some relevant concepts for implementing grid-following and grid-forming power converters. In this way, after reviewing some basis on PV and wind generation, this chapter discusses about the operation principle of such power converters, reviewing some fundamentals on grid synchronization strategies and current controllers. After that, some control schemes for gird-forming converters will be presented, paying particular attention to the role of droop control loops and the virtual impedance control. Finally, a general introduction of the synchronous power controller is provided as a preferred implementation of a grid-forming converter based on the virtual synchronous machine concept.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

    An Improved Current Control Strategy for a Grid-Connected Inverter under Distorted Grid Conditions

    This paper presents an improved current control strategy for a three-phase grid-connected inverter under distorted grid conditions. The main challenge associated with the grid-connected inverter in distributed generation (DG) systems is to maintain the harmonic contents in output current below the specified values even when the grid is subject to uncertain disturbances such as harmonic distortion. To overcome such a challenge, an improved current control scheme is proposed for a grid-connected inverter, in which the fundamental and harmonic currents are independently controlled by a proportional-integral (PI) decoupling controller and a predictive basis controller, respectively. The controller design approach is based on the model decomposition method, where the measured inverter currents and grid voltages are divided into the fundamental and harmonic components by means of moving average filters (MAFs). Moreover, to detect the angular displacement and angular frequency with better accuracy, even in the presence of the grid disturbance, the MAF is also introduced to implement an enhanced phase-lock loop (PLL) structure. Theoretical analyses as well as comparative simulation results demonstrate that the proposed control scheme can effectively compensate the uncertainties caused by the grid voltages with fast transient response. To validate the feasibility of the proposed scheme, the whole control algorithms are implemented on 2 kVA three-phase grid-connected inverter system using 32-bit floating-point DSP TMS320F28335. As a result, the proposed scheme is an attractive way to control a grid-connected inverter under adverse grid conditions
